My New Hair, Charity Salon

To celebrate the launch of our status as an official My New Hair charity salon, we held a special workshop which featured in The Echo.

My New Hair is a charity launched in 2006 by hairdressing legend Trevor Sorbie MBE. It joins forces with salons across the country training them to work with anyone who has experienced hair loss.

Following seminars focusing on how to deal with both the psychological and practical effects of hair loss, My New Hair salons can help hair loss sufferers in lots of ways.

Jo Bidston, co-owner of FX Hair andColour Studio, explained: “We are there for a client every step of the way. When they first begin to lose their hair, we will cut it free of charge in a style that is most practical and suitable.”

After that, the FX team advise on wigs and, once a wig has been chosen, they can cut, colour and fit the wig to ensure the best result is achieved. One of the first clients to benefit from this total approach is 39-year-old Vicki Chapman. She was diagnosed with cancer in November 2009 and, after just one session of chemotherapy, lost most of her long hair.

Initially she wore lots of bandanas, but with her 40th birthday approaching and some special summer events to attend, Vicki wanted a wig and has nothing but praise for the help she received from FX.

She said: “The team at FX have been fabulous. Wearing a wig has helped me feel feminine again, improved my confidence and, more than anything else, made me look normal.” And the work already undertaken by FX staff has won praise from My New Hair founder, Trevor Sorbie.

He added: “I am delighted that FX have joined our network of salons and are now able to offer this service to women in Southend.”
